This painting of the view from the beach at Emily Provincial Park on Pidgeon Lake near Omemee, Ontario. Mixing the blues was very elusive, I finally realized that I had mixed all my tubes of blue paints together to get the blues I wanted.

This oil portrait was painted on a routine DVAC Tuesday evening. All things considered, painting time usually works out to be around two hours in total, and this evening one of our members posed for us. These sessions are wonderful since the painters in attendance vary widely and wildly from one another in approach and technique. Tuesday evening at Don Valley is a weekly highlight in my life.

I was born in Tirana (Albania) and I arrived in Canada as a permanent resident on January 25, 2002. I graduated from Tirana’s Art College in 1956 and from Tirana’s University in 1963. I worked as a journalist for more than 30 years. At the same time I participated in many local and National Art Shows. I had a solo art show in Tirana in 1987.

This is my niece Sophie and Buddy, the family dog. Buddy’s in doggie heaven now. I love his calm, protective manner while Sophie playfully explores the garden with his help.

For my friend this picture title is Jelly Fish – as she claims to see the fish swiming in the cubes of jello!… I named it Prosperity – may we all live long and prosper and may the 2010 be great in every way. Prosperity for All!

When visiting family in Israel we all went for a picnic in a poppy filled valley east of Ashkelon. My nephew, a sweet, bright and articulate little boy gazed at us… “Why must you go back to Canada?” he asked. Later, we cooked over an open fire, and, as the day was warm and sunny, we dozed off under the trees.

This painting called Cityscape Europe # 1 was inspired by a cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam where I often found myself up near a castle, or on the old city walls, looking down on a city. All you can see are colourful roofs, and perhaps some people. In the painting I am making fun of the scene, while depicting it as a happy place worth remembering.

The wild and rocky Cape Breton shore is a romantic spot, frequented by seabirds and tourists mainly.  It is ideal to inspire artists, too, and, as you paint (or maybe take photos) you will sea eagles soaring overhead.

Lower Pitt Lake is a charming part of the Fraser River system where I have spent many a happy hour drinking in the peace and observing the great blue herons. The mountains of the Coastal Range are off in the distance.

The watercolour is of an unforgettable walk down a Cabbagetown street with my wife Sandy and our golden retriever Jessie, one morning in early November. It had snowed overnight when some foliage still remained on the chestnut trees. The quality of the light was soft and magical, and I have tried to capture it by avoiding contrasting tones.

Have had two solo shows of oil paintings and have been a part of  numerous group shows.

Subject matter deals frequently with exaggeration, impression and  solitude.

This is a sketch done from the Todmorden museum site looking across the valley at the Minto apartment building gong up at the Broadview-Pottery Road intersection.  It is an interesting piece of contemporary architecture and is bound to have a huge effect on the naighborhood as it is built to entice upscale professional people to this average income area. It is also a visual treat from the old East York format.

After a life as a cartographer and architectural illustrator, I enjoy to portray in detail the architecture of Toronto, the places where we mingled, where we worked, where we loved, places  of worship and learning, the Toronto we carry in our minds.

This painting is part of a large collection of oils and watercolours  about the architecture of Toronto. I trust that one day they will be considered historical pieces of a  Toronto relentlessly changing by modernity.

This double portrait was done at the club.  Two excellent subjects… having a subject who maintains a bright smile for an evening is an extraaordinary treat and then being able to add – as planned – her fiance to make a two-for-one was a special pleasure.  They are charming people and I hope I captured something of that in this effort.

22″ x 28″ I developed this painting from a sketch of the shipwreck I did while on winter vacation in Cayo Coco, Cuba.

This is done in acrylic on canvas. It is 18 ” wide by 22″ high. This portrait of a young boy was commissioned by his aunt who has since become a good friend of mine. I love his sweet trusting face!
